Randy Alcorn's Blog: Christian Life

Don’t Stop Voting (you do it every day with the choices you make)

Read BibleThe election is over, but the truth is that every season of our lives is election season. Voting isn’t something you do just every few years. We cast multiple votes each day. We cast votes for Heaven or Hell, for grace or truth. For self-control or self-indulgence. For the Spirit or the flesh. For abiding in Christ, or independence from Christ. For wisdom or foolishness, and blessing or curse.

The Duggar family: “open to receive whatever gifts God wants us to have”

The Duggar familyFew Christian families have received as much national media attention and caused as much debate among people (even some believers) as the Duggar family. They are featured on the TLC reality show 19 Kids and Counting.

Ed Welch on How Fighting Sin Hurts

Ed Welch quoteI greatly appreciate the ministry of the Christian Counseling & Educational Foundation (CCEF), located in Philadelphia. Their mission is to “Restore Christ to Counseling and Counseling to the Church.” Besides offering counseling services in their home office, they provide on-site training and distance education for leaders, pastors, counselors, and people with a heart for discipleship.

Evaluating Movies in Light of Scripture

Movie theaterOn my Facebook page, someone asked: "Randy, you often mention that you and Nanci have been to a movie. I'm curious about what kind and rating of movies you attend. I'm interested in how you regard the type of movie (violence, sexual overtones, etc.). Should Christians knowingly attend such films? This of course also applies to TV programs."

Excellence or Faithfulness?

SkatesNanci and I have a confession to make—we’re sick and tired of hearing so much about the importance of excellence in all things. While we’re all for excellence, and all of us should strive for it in some areas, it is impossible for any of us to be excellent in everything.

Facebook and Twitter: Are They Worth It?

As many of you know, I am on both Facebook and Twitter, where I frequently post short updates and devotional thoughts. Some people may ask if as a Christian, being on Facebook and Twitter and other social networking sites is really worth it, or just a waste of time.

John Piper addressed this in an article called Why and How I Am Tweeting:

FacebookI see two kinds of responses to social Internet media like blogging, MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, and others.

One says: These media tend to shorten attention spans, weaken discursive reasoning, lure people away from Scripture and prayer, disembody ...

Fences and Freedom

fenceWhen the summer started, our grandsons weren’t having all that much fun in our big side yard. Why? Because there’s a road on the north side of our yard, and these days the cars present a real danger to careless children chasing balls. And our grandsons love to chase balls.

A few thoughts about popular movies

Christian AudioBefore I get to today's blog, in the past I’ve mentioned http://www.christianaudio.com/, and the free titles to download each month (this month, it’s The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky.) I’ve taken advantage of the sale below, good until December 4, 2009, and you may wish to. For instance, I downloaded the entire ESV audio Bible for $7.49 and a number of others. Here’s the info about the sale:

Twice per year (and only for a limited time), christianaudio offers all our titles and most other titles for the incredibly low price ...

Fiction Feeds Souls (Including Children’s)

N.D. WilsonAs a fiction writer, and as a father and grandfather, this post by Nate Wilson resonated with me. I met Nate a while back at a Desiring God conference. He’s a good brother with a great point—the power of story, and the importance of saturating our children and grandchildren with the kind of stories that will, as Nate says, “Give them a taste for goodness, for truth, for beauty.”

Four Things You Cannot Recover...

A few months ago I happened to see this on The Heart of a Pastor Wife's blog, and thought these pictures were profound.
