The Christmas Story

Christmas videoThis video was produced by Portland Christian School a couple of years ago, but I just saw it after my friend Dale Walker sent it to me. It features preschool children being asked about the Christmas story.

God Sends Christmas Snow, Clean and Quieting

snowGod’s voice thunders in marvelous ways;
he does great things beyond our understanding.

He says to the snow, ‘Fall on the earth,’
and to the rain shower, ‘Be a mighty downpour.’ Job 37:5-6

Usually here in my part of Oregon there are more mighty downpours than great snows. But my brother Lance and I, who've lived here all our lives, were just agreeing that this is the most snow we've seen since 1968, forty years ago. We vividly remember sledding together at our home just two miles from where Nanci and I live.
Yesterday I took ...

Snow on the New Earth, and a New Year's Resolution

snowHere in our part of Oregon, the snow is melting off as quickly as it came. But we had about ten days in the middle when it was a winter wonderland—making December 2008 our snowiest month since January 1950, four years before I was born.

This big snowy blob in our driveway is our Subaru wagon. Since I have a ten foot commute to my office, attached to our garage, transportation wasn't an issue.

They say Gresham, where we live, was hit harder than any part of the greater Portland area. A lot of Christmases merge together in ...

Christmas Memories and Anticipating the Eternal Christmas to Come

Christmas presentsAs a child, my favorite part of waking up on Christmas morning was the first waking realization that it was Christmas, which was the best day of the year, even in our nonchristian family.

Bonhoeffer Resources and Lessons for Today

Dietrich BonhoefferThis photo is of Dietrich Bonhoeffer in Tegel prison, prior to his move to the notorious concentration camp of Buchenwald. Though visits weren’t frequent or long, at Tegel his parents and his fiancé Maria were sometimes allowed to bring him books, such as the one in his hand.

Reflections on Christmas 2007, Children and Gratitude to God

Christmas 2007This was our first Christmas with family numbered in double digits. Nanci and I are deeply grateful for our wonderful daughters, our awesome sons-in-law and our four priceless grandsons. Including Jack, little Santa.

The Meaning of Christmas

My friend Robin Hatcher sent me the following link. This song and its singers may or may not fit your musical tastes. But in terms of its message, it is RIGHT on target, and a great reminder of what this Christmas season is about.

Opera at Macy’s

Someone sent Nanci and me a link to this video, and we loved it. May our hearts be drawn to the Christ of the Christmas season, who is the Christ of all seasons.

A Christmas greeting, and thoughts about Immanuel: God with us

In this 6-minute video, I share about Matthew 1:23, which tells us about Christmas. It says, “The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel—which means “God with us”.

Pondering God’s Giving Heart This Christmas

Christmas giftOne of the things I love most about Christmas is that it’s all about giving—with the ultimate gifts being Christ’s incarnation and His atonement. 2 Corinthians 8:9 says, “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.”
