How High Should Our Standards Be When it Comes to the U.S. President?

On the one hand, we should be acutely aware that every candidate is imperfect. We will be voting for a president, not a pastor, and certainly not a Messiah. We must hold fully to the biblical standards of leadership when it comes to appointing church leaders.

Carl F. H. Henry, founding editor of the magazine Christianity Today and author or editor of more than 40 books, including The Uneasy Conscience of Modern Fundamentalism and God, Revelation & Authority, 6 Volumes, was often considered the most prominent American evangelical thinker of the mid-20th century.

In the last paragraph of God, Revelation & Authority, 6 Volumes, Henry wrote:

Biblical illiteracy among Christians is arguably at an all time high, with chilling implications that can hardly be overstated. I know that various things in the church will inevitably change, such as songs and hymns taking on new forms, and that's fine. What isn't fine is for God's people to neglect His Word.

American Evangelicals Believe There Are Different Ways to Heaven

Last month a UPI report began as follows:

America remains a nation of believers, but a new survey finds most Americans don't feel their religion is the only way to eternal life — even if their faith tradition teaches otherwise.

The findings, revealed Monday in a survey of 35,000 adults, can either be taken as a positive sign of growing religious tolerance, or disturbing evidence that Americans dismiss or don't know fundamental teachings of their own faiths.

Among the more startling numbers in the survey, conducted last year by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life: 57 percent of evangelical church attenders said they believe many religions can lead to eternal life, in conflict with traditional evangelical teaching.
