Randy Alcorn's Blog: giving

It’s No Accident You Live in This Time and Place

WalletWhen the following was posted last month on the Desiring God blog, written by Michael Oh, I was very touched by it. Read it, ponder it, pray over it. In case God speaks to your heart about giving, I’ve included a few ministries you may wish to invest in, an investment which will pay off for eternity.

World Evangelism Statistics, and Missions Giving

worldI'm not a big statistics guy, but sometimes statistics can be revealing.

The following statistics are from the book 2020 Vision, by Bill and Amy Stearns.

Financial Challenges, Worry and Giving

Recently I was interviewed for a segment that aired on the Coral Ridge Hour, called "How now should Christians live in today's current economy?"

worryI'm speaking next week at a Generous Giving conference in Scottsdale, Arizona. As I'm working hard to finish up final revisions of my book If God is Good... Faith in the Midst of Suffering and Evil, I'm also thinking about giving and stewardship in light of the financial challenges so many people are facing. Many people find themselves worrying.

Worry has a ...

A Triumphant Life: William Borden

Bordon GraveFive years ago I received an e-mail from our friends Pat and Rakel Thurman, who had been corresponding with a tour group that was going to Egypt. This group had a special request: they hoped to find the humble grave of missionary William Borden, which was mentioned in my book The Treasure Principle. Pat and Rakel, who were missionaries in Egypt for several years, later received an e-mail and a photo from the group after they successfully found Borden's grave.

Here's what they wrote:

Thanks so much for helping us find the grave of William Borden. After visiting ...

Crisis in Congo: An appeal from World Relief and Lynne Hybels

CongoI received an e-mail from World Relief, one of the finest Christian relief and development agencies, about the unfolding crisis in Congo:

The situation in the war-torn Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is critical. Thousands were fleeing as rebel forces advanced on the city of Goma in eastern DRC. Rebel soldiers were on the edge of the city as a fragile ceasefire held.

The crisis is rapidly unfolding into a humanitarian disaster on a huge scale. Reports of random killings, rape and other atrocities are widespread.

Right now, the situation in Goma is incredibly tense, with many Congolese upset at ...

Question and Answer of the Week: the Old Testament Model of Tithing and Christians Today

offering plateDoes the Old Testament model of tithing still apply to Christians today, since it was part of the old covenant?

I have mixed feelings on tithing. I detest legalism. I certainly don’t want to pour new wine into old wineskins, imposing superseded first covenant restrictions on Christians. However, the fact is that every New Testament example of giving goes beyond the tithe. This means that none falls short of it. The strongest arguments made against tithing today are “law versus grace.” But does being under grace mean we should stop doing all that was done under the law?

I ...

Children in Crisis Worldwide

Ugandan girlEarlier this year, my friend Doug Nichols, founder and director of ACTION International Ministries, a great missions organization, sent these humbling statistics about needy children worldwide. As you and I pray and consider what to do with our lives and resources, I hope God will use these facts to touch our hearts. (By the way, this Sunday, November 8, is Orphan Sunday, an opportunity to rouse your church, community and friends to God’s call to care for the orphan. Learn more at www.orphansunday.org)

Generosity and the Younger Generations

Clarus ConferenceEarlier this year I spoke at the Clarus Conference in New Mexico, along with Wayne Grudem. At one of the sessions we talked about the topic of giving and generosity, especially related to the younger generations.

Pregnancy Resource Centers: Serving Unborn Babies and Their Mothers

Recently the Pregnancy Resource Centers of Greater Portland celebrated their 25th anniversary, and they asked me to record a short message for their celebration, which I was happy to do. What a great ministry they have. Since 1984, Portland's PRCs have helped more than 160,000 women and teens who were unprepared for pregnancy, or who faced the possibility of a pregnancy.

Question and Answer: Paying Down Debt and Giving

young familyThe question I have is that we are reaping consequences from bad choices. My husband and I have a young family and are still paying down $100,000 of student loans from both of us going to a private university.
