Those of you who enjoy the resources from Desiring God (a site we highly recommend) are probably familiar with “Ask Pastor John”, where John Piper answers questions on video. That’s our inspiration for this feature: we’re inviting those of you who read Randy’s blog to submit your question for him in a comment on this post. We’ll choose three of those questions

How can you have assurance of your own salvation?

Another question a reader asked me on my blog was this: Even though I gave my heart to the Lord a long time ago, I always struggle with thoughts that when I die, I will find I am not saved. That produces a lot of fear. I know the Bible says to believe, but how do you know what is really in your heart, since only God can see and know what is in our hearts?

How do I minister to an unsaved friend whose loved one died without a relationship with Christ?

In today’s blog, I’m answering one final question that was asked by a reader:

How would you respond and minister to unsaved friends or family (or even strangers) who have lost a loved one and assume their lost loved one is in Heaven, even though that person clearly did not have a relationship with Jesus Christ?

What are some criteria to use for choosing a Christian college or a secular university?

It's summertime, and many recent high school graduates will be starting college for the first time this fall. Other young people are beginning to look into which college they would like to attend in the next few years.

When our daughters were considering a college, we told them, "Judge everything you hear by the Word of God, like the Bereans in Acts 17:11." There will be disagreements with faculty and students, of course, but that's healthy as long as people are appealing ...

Question and Answer of the Week: Do you believe in guardian angels?

Scripture suggests there are guardian angels for children. Jesus says of children, "their angels behold the face of my Father," Matt. 18:10. Also, it appears there was one specific angel assigned to the apostle Peter ("his angel," Acts 12:15).

Luke 16:22 has "angels" carrying Lazarus to Paradise, but we don't know if one angel was his guardian on earth, or more than one, or if the angels are those who greet him on the other side of death.

Fasting seems to be an oft-neglected spiritual discipline for Christians these days. Do you have any thoughts or suggestions on fasting?

A few years ago I was involved in a study group with some younger men, and we went through Dallas Willard's book, The Spirit of the Disciplines. One of the issues we discussed was fasting. Below is what I wrote to them when we decided as a group to fast:

I hear all kinds of financial advice in today's times. I've heard about investing and saving and preparing for the future (for example, saving for our children's education or retirement). What would you say would be the best financial advice for someone who is just starting out with marriage and children and really doesn't know what to do with their finances?
