Bert and Colleen ElliotMissionary Bert Elliot (brother of martyred missionary Jim Elliot) went home to be with Jesus last Friday. Nanci and I met Bert and his wife Colleen in January 2006, which marked the fiftieth anniversary of the martyrdom of the five missionaries in Ecuador.

The Story of One Man's Faithful Service to Christ

open bookThere are many stories of men who faithfully served Jesus and shared the gospel, despite never seeing any of the fruit from his efforts for many years.

While we may never seem to see any results from serving the Lord here on Earth, Malachi 3:16-18 is a remarkable passage that tells us God is watching and is documenting the faithful deeds of his children on Earth: “Then those who feared the Lord talked with each other, and the Lord listened and heard. A scroll of remembrance was written in his presence concerning those who feared the Lord and honored ...

Paul Tripp on Motivation and Obedience in Children

I read this question, from Abraham Piper, and answer, from Paul Tripp, on the Desiring God blog. He's also on the pastoral staff of Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia and is a professor at the Redeemer Seminary in Dallas, Texas.

Here's what they wrote:

Thanks so much for helping us find the grave of William Borden. After visiting ...

left outReaders of my books often question whether the doctrine of eternal rewards is biblical. They say, It seems self-centered to do good works so I will be rewarded.

We have so emphasized the idea of never acting in our own self-interest, that we ignore the continuous appeals of Scripture to be motivated by the fact that following our Lord is not only right, but smart. And sin is not only wrong, but stupid.

Read the blessings and curses of Deuteronomy. Read the wisdom and foolishness passages that pervade Proverbs. Satan has conned many Christians into a view of the Christian ...
