I appreciate John Piper’s view of retirement as an opportunity to serve God in another season of life. I thought about this the other day after playing tennis at an athletic club and overhearing two retired men saying, “We’re not much use anymore, are we?” They were joking, but only sort of. Clearly, they felt it was mostly true.
God has his people everywhere. Many vocations are more important than football. But regardless of what it is, when God gives His people a platform to stand on, and a voice that can be heard, He expects them to represent Him faithfully.
None of us knows how much time we have left in this world, but in terms of eternity, the time for all of us is very short. No matter what our age, we can all benefit from this perspective. As missionary C. T. Studd put it, “Only one life, ‘twill soon be past, only what’s done for Christ will last.”
