The Bible: More Than Stories

holding BibleI am often hearing people say these days that God has revealed himself to us in stories, and that story, not doctrine, is the framework in which we should see our faith.

I LOVE story (which is why I’ve written and enjoyed fiction and also love good biographies). However, story is NOT everything.

Puppies For Sale: A story illustrating God's heart

boy and puppyThis story, by an unknown author, was ciruclated years ago. It is likely fictional, as many such stories are, but think of it as a parable.

A store owner was tacking a sign above his door that read "Puppies For Sale." Signs like that have a way of attracting small children and sure enough, a little boy appeared under the store owner's sign.

The Smell of Old Books

Do you love the smell of an old book? Just finished a delightful rereading Out of the Silent Planet, Space Trilogy Series, the first C. S. Lewis fiction I read when I was a new teenage Christian in 1970 (The Problem of Pain was my first Lewis nonfiction). It’s the first of his space trilogy, and I’m about to read again Perelandra (alternative Brit title: Voyage to Venus).

God’s Little-Known Providence in a Well-Known Life

John Wooden & Bill WaltonWith all the attention on the NBA playoffs, it seems a fitting time to tell a basketball story.

John Wooden, now 99 years old, was the first person to become a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame as both a player (class of 1961) and as a coach (class of 1973).

Heart-stirring words from a daughter of North Korea and a daughter of God

Young womanI excerpted this from a larger post. Dr. Michael Oh is president of CBI Japan and serves on the board of the Lausanne Committee on World Evangelization. (By the way, I answered on video one more question submitted by readers, which will be posted on Friday. Since this story is timely, I wanted to be sure to share it with you today.)

On the second night of the Third Lausanne Congress taking place in Cape Town, South Africa, an 18 year-old girl from North Korea shared her story.

A Story about Makeup

Hope you enjoy this video that was recorded during a break from a recent filming.

J.I. Packer and a Tale of a Typewriter

Randy Alcorn and J.I. PackerJ.I. Packer, author of Evangelism and the Sovereignty of God and other classics, is one of my favorite writers. God has used his book Knowing God in my life profoundly. It is still one of my top five books of all time.

A Story of Rescue in Japan

JapanAs I’m sure many of you are, Nanci and I have been burdened for the people of Japan. We’ve been praying for people there, especially the believers, that the gospel could be spread in the midst of devastation.

With so many heartbreaking reports of death and loss, this news story telling the rescue of a baby girl is a wonderful glimpse of God’s mercy and saving grace.

God’s Good Gifts

FlowerI’ve been attending and speaking at the C.S. Lewis Summer Institute at Oxbridge. Yesterday afternoon at one of the seminars, I talked about the problem of evil and suffering. We discussed how EVERY worldview must address this problem and the problem of GOOD as well. And no worldview does this as well as the biblical one.

The Eternal Impact of an 8th Grader’s Kindness

By Kathy Norquist, Randy's executive assistant

Handing a giftTerry Harris gave me permission to share her story about Randy and I’m doing so, without his knowledge or permission . :) I share it not just to give recognition to Randy, but as a reminder to us all that showing kindness to others can make a significant eternal difference in more than one person’s life.
