Bad Doctrine is a Cruel Taskmaster

Bad doctrineWhen I came across this statement somewhere, that bad doctrine is a cruel taskmaster, it stuck with me. I asked EPM staffer Julia Stager to provide some verses demonstrating it, and I added my summary statements to hers.

How can our default destination be Hell if we are one of the elect?

I don't deal with election in the Heaven book, though I do believe in election, since the Bible teaches it. Election does not change the default destination issue. All are conceived and born in sin, that is the sense in which our default destination is hell. Without God's intervention that's where we'll go. That's the point, and biblically it's not debatable.

Jesus: The Center of our Faith

Jesus is the center of our faith. These verses are evidence that true belief in God must include believing in Jesus Christ.

Why Should We Believe in a Historical Adam?

A historical AdamLast month Kevin DeYoung posted an excellent blog called “10 Reasons to Believe in a Historical Adam.” I can’t say enough about the importance of this subject. Everywhere I turn, including on the campuses of many Christian liberal arts colleges, I see the drift away from believing in an historical Adam and Eve.

I disagree with some of your theological positions. Are you open to discussing them?

No two humans will have an identical theology. I cannot explain all of my convictions without long discussions and turning not to a few select passages here and there, but dozens and dozens and dozens of them. And if I took eight hours to explain what I believe and why, I think you would have as many or more questions about my explanation than about my original statements of faith.

Where is the judgment of faith found in the Bible?

Question from a reader:

I understand that the Lord allows His people to either enter the Intermediate Heaven or, if they have not come to the Lord in faith, to be sent to the Intermediate Hell…but I am wondering what passage of Scripture supports this statement.

Is God both man and woman combined?

Question from a reader:

Is God both man and woman combined? Is he my heavenly father and mother? Are women made in God’s image? Are man and woman joined in marriage a more complete or closer image of God?

Answer from Julia Stager (EPM staff):

God is triune. He is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Each part of the trinity is represented in the scriptures as masculine. Perhaps counter intuitively, this does not make God male (as we understand the term). God the Father and God the Holy Spirit are both without body (and therefore not, strictly speaking, male ...

Was Elijah taken to Heaven in a chariot of fire or in a whirlwind?

Question from a reader:

On page 359 of your Heaven book, you mention speaking with the saints of old: “I would like to ask Elijah about being taken away in the chariot.” Elijah and Elisha were separated by a chariot of fire, but both NIV and KJV say in II Kings 2:11 that Elijah “went up to Heaven in a whirlwind.”

When were the disciples called?

Question from a reader:

I read the other day about the disciples being possibly called at different times throughout Jesus' ministry to follow him, but they did not begin to follow him full-time until the last year and a half. I know some had families and jobs. Can you elaborate on the calling of the twelve? Was it a one time, drop everything and follow me call? Or did they hear about Jesus, come to know Jesus, followed off/on until later in his ministry.

Why doesn’t Genesis 1:1 state that the world was created ex nihilo?

I’m sure this passage in Genesis could have been further clarified, but perhaps it doesn’t need to be. God must have created out of nothing because there was nothing before he created (otherwise he would not be God).
