Why doesn’t the church address the issue of modesty?

Here’s another great question I was asked on my blog:

Modesty"My husband and I are glad that the church is finally talking about the problem of pornography   and purity in the Body of Christ, and helping men address this issue. But why do we never hear about purity for women in the way they dress? I’m talking about women who profess to be Christ-followers. They become a stumbling block to their brothers when they dress seductively or dress to be sexy as the world has deemed fashionable. Please address the issue of modestly."

What was the response to your first book, Christians in the Wake of the Sexual Revolution? (audio)

Protecting Purity in a Technological Corinth

I used the phrase “technological Corinth” in 1985 when I published my first book, Christians in the Wake of the Sexual Revolution. Corinth was the immoral city in the first century, and 1 and 2 Corinthians refer to all the immorality in the church’s midst. Everywhere out on the streets there were prostitutes, a thousand priestesses of Aphrodite. It was a degenerate culture.

In the '80s, there was the advent of VCRs and places where you could rent a VHS or Beta tape. (If you remember Beta, like me, you are now officially old.) You could rent a Disney movie as well as an inappropriate movie you could watch in the privacy of your own home, instead of going to a porn theater where you might be seen. That in and of itself was an incredible revolution in making lust and sexual sin more secretive and easier to get away with. (Seemingly, but of course God sees all and judges all, and our sexual sins hurt our families and others too.)

How do I relate to my new neighbor friend who is gay?

It is very hard to communicate on this subject with both grace and truth. We are concerned for a person’s soul, and not wanting to be harsh, but it is also critical not to back off from the truth that any sex outside of the biblical marriage between a man and woman is wrong. I oppose gay marriage, but not only as a matter of righteousness, but also because it is deadly to those involved in it. It is always deadly for all of us to choose the path of sin.
