ACLU’s Agenda for Churches

The ACLU likes to come across as representing the interests of public citizens whose rights are supposedly violated when government or schools allow prayer, Bible reading or other free exercise of religion on their premises.

Living a Life of Grace and Truth for the Audience of One

comfortWhat distinguished the first Christians from the world around them? It certainly wasn’t their buildings—they had none. It wasn’t their programs—they had none. It wasn’t their political power—they had none.

Read Acts 2 and Acts 4 and you see a radical difference in the church, a profound transformation in the way people treated each other. Christians were different in the way they behaved, in the way they lived. They were characterized by visible acts of love and generosity and joyous sacrifice for the good of others.

Educating tomorrow’s church—whose job is it?

Parent and teenWHAT IS EDUCATION?

LEARNING: The process by which every person acquires a certain body of knowledge, and a corresponding set of personal values, attitudes, behavior, and skills.

STUDENT: A person with a highly impressionable mind, significantly affected by the knowledge, values, attitudes, and behaviors of others, especially by those in positions of authority.

Where Was The Church?

churchI’ll begin with some important prefacing remarks. I am absolutely committed to the centrality of local churches in God’s kingdom agenda. Organizations such as EPM are secondary and supplemental to the work of local churches. I was a local church pastor for fourteen years and my heart will always be with the church. As a friend of mine puts it, “The church is God’s Plan A, and there is no Plan B.”

Why Are There Different Doctrines in Different Churches?

churchQuestion from a reader:

I am a newer believer and sometimes get frustrated over all of the different doctrines in various churches. Can you help me sort these out?

Why is the church so divided?

You are certainly not alone in wishing that various groups–you specifically highlighted liberals, orthodox, and fundamentalists–just put differences aside and get along. I will briefly look at these three groups and suggest why this may not be Biblically possible at this time in Kingdom history.

What is your response to my disappointment with the local church and decision to attend a small group Bible study instead?

We have a natural desire to be independent, but we need godly church leaders, and should seek to find a local church that has godly leaders rather than to withdraw from churches.

How do you find a church that understands there is a spiritual reality beyond what we can see?

churchQuestion from a reader:

God is changing many perspectives in my life about Him and reality. He is basically opening my eyes to the fact that this world is not all there is, but there is a true spiritual battle going on. I’m looking for a new church. I believe I want to be somewhere where people are living in the reality of the spiritual realm and not just saying they believe it but then living like only this is realty. What cautions/advice do you have to offer?

Answer from Randy Alcorn:

I would like to see more ...

I’ve heard negative things about seeker churches. What’s your opinion?

church

Question from a reader:

I’ve heard negative things about Rick Warren and Saddleback Church, as well as Willow Creek Church and other seeker churches. What’s your opinion on this issue?

Answer from Randy Alcorn:

Attacking fellow Bible-believing Christians is becoming commonplace. Spreading inaccurate information is epidemic.

How do you know if a church is charismatic?

While we do not regard ourselves a charismatic church, we do not wish to be known as “anti-charismatic.” What we do insist upon is a spirit of love and unity, the total sufficiency of Christ, and the final authority of the Scriptures.
