When Does Each Human Life Begin?: The Answer of Scripture

baby“The babies [Jacob and Esau] jostled each other within her [Rebekah].” (Genesis 25:22)

“In the womb he [Jacob] grasped his brother’s heel; as a man he struggled with God.” (Hosea 12:3)

Your hands shaped me and made me. Will you now turn and destroy me? Remember that you molded me like clay. Will you now turn me to dust again? Did you not pour me out like milk and curdle me like cheese, clothe me with skin and flesh and knit me together with bones and sinews? You gave me life and showed me kindness, and in your providence watched over my spirit.” (Job 10:8-12)

When Does Each Human Life Begin?: The Answer of Science

Science confirms exactly what Scripture demonstrates, that there is a point at which human life does not exist and then is suddenly created by God. In Science this is known as the point of conception.

When does life begin according to your study of scripture?

I’ll cut and paste two portions from the book below. If you only want section specifically on breathing, go to 6f below.
As to Scripture and beginning of life, I follow with excerpt from Appendix B: Abortion in the Bible and Church History. The portion concerning Jesus and John the Baptist in Luke 1 is especially revealing I think.

Why do you think prolife physicians who prescribe oral contraceptives have vested interest in doing so?

In my opinion it would be unwise to not recognize that everyone, including you and me, has vested interests. It’s just part of being human. Do we have vested interests in who we are voting for and why, where we live, what we do, who we hang out with and what we believe? Of course we do.

For instance, someone who believes all birth control is wrong will have vested interests in believing the pill causes abortions. Why? Because that will be another reason they can claim the pill is bad.

And someone who has used or prescribed the pill will naturally have strong vested interests in believing it does not cause abortions. Why? Because if you’re prolife, the last thing you want to believe is that your actions and advice may have resulted in the deaths of children.

A Church’s Position Statement on Abortion

churchCirculated on Sanctity of Human Life Sunday

I was asked to write this statement to be printed in my church bulletin on Sanctity of Human Life Sunday in 1998. Both believers and visiting unbelievers were in mind as I wrote it. You are welcome to use it in part or in its entirety.

This week is the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion in America in 1973.

Not just our society, but our church has been deeply affected by abortion. In our Sanctity of Life service last year, over fifty of our people, some walking together as families, brought thirty-five roses up the aisle in the services and placed them in a cradle—one rose for each one million children killed by abortion in America since 1973.

Biblical Perspectives on Unborn Children

The Bible teaches human beings are made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27; James 3:9). Not just Adam and Eve, but each individual since has been personally created by God (Malachi 2:10). Personhood is never measured by age, stage of development, or mental, physical, or social skills (Exodus 4:11).

What Makes a Human Life “Meaningful”?

Who determines which lives are meaningful and which aren’t? The answer, always, is that powerful people decide whether weaker people’s lives are meaningful.
