A Letter From the Future

Dear Mom:

Can you believe it is 2023 already? I am still writing “22” on everything. Seems like yesterday I was sitting in first grade celebrating the century change!

I know we haven’t really chatted since Christmas. Sorry. Anyway, I have some difficult news, and I really didn’t want to talk about it face-to-face.

Ted’s had a promotion, and I should be up for a hefty raise this year if I keep putting in those crazy hours. You know how I work at it. Yes, we are still struggling with the bills.

Do you think that Leviticus 17 is a biblical basis for belief that life begins at implantation?

These passages are not attempting to teach a theology of when human life begins and should not be used in support of abortion at any stage.

What Makes a Human Life “Meaningful”?

Who determines which lives are meaningful and which aren’t? The answer, always, is that powerful people decide whether weaker people’s lives are meaningful.

A Dialogue about Birth Control

familyThe following is a conversation between two Christians who have different viewpoints on the issue of birth control. (I’ve made up the dialogue, but much of it comes out of discussions we’ve had in the Bible college ethics courses I’ve taught.) Think about the points they make. You will likely agree and disagree with both of them at different times. Hopefully this will help you develop and clarify your own position, which may combine elements of both or be very different from either.

What do you think about invitro fertilization, frozen embryos, etc.?

There is substantial scientific reason to believe frozen embryos are persons and should be granted the same rights as older, larger, and less vulnerable persons.

What do you think of the progestin only pill as a contraceptive while nursing?

The so-called mini-pill is the least reliable in suppressing ovulation. Therefore, its mechanism of action is more likely to be post-ovulatory—that is, abortifacient.

Why do you think prolife physicians who prescribe oral contraceptives have vested interest in doing so?

In my opinion it would be unwise to not recognize that everyone, including you and me, has vested interests. It’s just part of being human. Do we have vested interests in who we are voting for and why, where we live, what we do, who we hang out with and what we believe? Of course we do.

For instance, someone who believes all birth control is wrong will have vested interests in believing the pill causes abortions. Why? Because that will be another reason they can claim the pill is bad.

And someone who has used or prescribed the pill will naturally have strong vested interests in believing it does not cause abortions. Why? Because if you’re prolife, the last thing you want to believe is that your actions and advice may have resulted in the deaths of children.

When Does Each Human Life Begin?: The Answer of Science

Science confirms exactly what Scripture demonstrates, that there is a point at which human life does not exist and then is suddenly created by God. In Science this is known as the point of conception.

God Has Exclusive Prerogatives Over Human Life And Death

“Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.” (Hebrews 4:13)
