Is it wrong for Christians to spend money on entertainment and leisure?
Q&A answered by Randy Alcorn and Wayne Grudem at the 2010 Clarus Conference.
My husband and I have long been readers of your fiction, ever since we were introduced to your work through Deadline. We went on to read Dominion aloud together, and since have used your books to begin our own discussions on faith together.
There has been much interest in making Randy's book Deadline into a movie. In fact, the screenplay has already been written.
I enjoy science fiction and I do like Star Wars, especially the original three movies. However, Star Wars is a very poor place to get a theology, and that’s my biggest problem with its influence on the young, who don’t yet have the filters in place to screen out the heresy. If kids and parents can sit down, like we did with our daughters, and discuss the theological errors with “the Force,” that can be very good for them (and us). Some things are better not to get exposed to, but some our kids will inevitably be exposed ...
You will inevitably adopt the morality of the programs, movies, books, magazines, music, Internet sites, and conversations you participate in. GIGO—Garbage in, garbage out; Godliness in, godliness out. The cognitive is basic to the behavioral—you become what you choose to feed your mind on.
Warning: Don't ever take an email you wrote to a small group of friends and turn it into a printed article, unless you first edit it very carefully, or ask someone else to.
In Scripture Jesus is called our Creator, Lord, Master, Redeemer, Friend, Brother and many other things, and he is more in addition to what he is called.
My wife Nanci, whom I deeply respect, and who is also my best friend, sat beside me at The Passion yesterday on the end of the row in case she had to leave because of being emotionally overwhelmed. She didn’t have to leave, but cried steadily, from Gethsemane on. So did I. In our car, Nanci finally broke the silence and said, “I kept thanking Jesus for being my hero.”
He is far more than a hero, of course—but he certainly is that. The movie brought me closer to Jesus and to Nanci. I couldn’t have asked for anything more.
