50 Days of HeavenThroughout the ages, Heaven has played a dominant role in the thoughts and lives of God’s people. Heaven is the North Star by which countless Christians have navigated their lives. But have you noticed? Heaven today has largely fallen off our radar screens. If we are honest, we must admit that we are not daily and consciously looking forward to Heaven, much less to a New Earth. We’ve reduced Heaven to an otherworldly state, and we’ve ignored the clear biblical promise of a redeemed universe over which we will serve as God’s delegated rulers. We’ve ...

Christian the LionYou may have seen the video of Christian the Lion being reunited with two men who raised him as a cub. If you haven’t, you’re in for a treat. And if you have, you may want to watch again.

It started when two friends living in London in 1969 bought a 35-pound lion cub, who they named Christian, and raised him in a flat under the furniture store where they worked. But after a year, he had grown to 185 pounds and had become very expensive to feed. The men met wild life naturalist George Adamson, who helped ...

Do we have to wait to be with Christ until the New Earth?

When we die we go to be with Christ (II Cor. 5:8) which is wonderful. But we are still incomplete, in a pre-resurrected state, anticipating Christ's return to earth, and our resurrections. The place we'll live forever will be where God comes down to dwell with us, on the New Earth (Revelation 21:1-3).

Do you take a position in the young Earth/old Earth debate? If so, where are you?

EarthIf I had only Scripture to judge by I would assume it is a young Earth. If I had only science to judge by I would assume it is an old Earth. I know that the two can be reconciled but I'm not entirely convinced either way. I probably lean toward the young Earth in the belief that the assumptions guiding the testing of the Earth's age may be faulty (e.g. uniform rate of decay).

Does the idea we may inhabit other planets lend credit to the Mormon belief that you get your own planet when you die?

In Chapter 26 of your Heaven book, you discuss space and time. You say, “I can easily envision our inhabiting and governing other resurrected planets.” Does this lend credit to the Mormon belief that you get your own planet when you die?

Does the Old Testament reveal many, if any, specifics about the location of those who died and were saved?

The New Testament reflects much more specific revelation from God of the afterlife. Yet there are some strong Old Testament indicators, though not nearly as many.

Job had the assurance that although he was going to be eaten by worms, he would receive a new body and in that body would actually see God face to face, obviously conscious. In Job 19:25-27 he says that “I know that my Redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand upon the earth. And after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God; I myself ...

Don’t you think doing the same things we did on Earth will seem rather boring and mundane in the light of being redeemed?

I’m reading your book on Heaven but still struggle with Heaven “being the same, only without sin” because I somehow believe we won’t enjoy many of the same things on the New Earth as we do on this Earth. Don’t you think they will seem rather boring and mundane in the light of being redeemed?

I think redemption is first and foremost return to a prior state. That’s why I emphasize all the re-words. Now, resurrection, also a re- word, is an improvement on original state, but the emphasis is on continuity.

In his resurrection, Jesus ...

The Bible teaches that our eternal home will be a place we’ve already been—earth. It will be a New Earth, a transformed earth.

homeGod’s people are described as aliens and strangers, looking for a country of their own (Hebrews 11:14). This world, under the curse, is not our home. In fact, our real home is a place we’ve never lived.

When I ride my bike through my old neighborhood (not far from where I now live), a fond familiarity washes over me. The hills, the houses, the fences and fields, the schoolyard where I played ball. When I gaze at the house I grew up in, it reverberates with memories of my father, mother, brother, friends, dogs, cats, frogs, and ...

Let me start with what Heaven won’t be: boring. It is not a place where we will be ghosts or angels endlessly floating around on clouds, strumming harps, and wishing we’d brought a magazine.

Usually when we refer to Heaven, we mean the present Heaven where followers of Jesus go when we die. Though the present Heaven is a wonderful place, it’s not the place we’re made for—the place where God promises we can live forever. The Bible calls that future Heaven the New Earth. Sometime after Jesus returns, he will bring us to live on that New Earth—a place beautiful beyond our wildest imagination.

Randy holding BibleReaders might like to check out this article about Randy, which appeared on the front page of The Oregonian newspaper on Easter Sunday. The online version of the article, which focused on Randy’s beliefs about Heaven, is followed by several comments, many of which are quite hostile. “I think this reflects the anti-Christian mood in this area of the country,” Randy said about the comments. “The level of intolerance of pro-tolerance people is sometimes amazing.”

Here are a few excerpts from the story:

On Easter, Christians celebrate their conviction that Jesus was resurrected and is preparing a place for ...
