Part One: Arguments Concerning Life, Humanity, and Personhood
1. “It is uncertain when human life begins; that’s a religious question that cannot be answered by science.”
2. “The fetus is just a part of the pregnant woman’s body, like her tonsils or appendix. You can’t seriously believe a frozen embryo is an actual person.”
3. “The unborn is an embryo or a fetus—just a simple blob of tissue, a product of conception—not a baby. Abortion is terminating a pregnancy, not killing a child.”
Prolife Resources including abortion alternatives, adoption, postabortion support, prolife action and strategies, etc.
When I wrote the first edition of this book in the early 1990s, I wanted to supply people with a carefully researched, highly useable resource. I had no idea the impact it would have. The book sold over 75,000 copies, a huge number for a book on this subject. Most importantly, it has been repeatedly used by thousands of people in their attempts to speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves. Many prolife groups use the book to train their volunteers and their speakers. College ethics classes use it as a textbook. I have received letters from hundreds of high school and college students who’ve used the book to help them prepare speeches or write term papers and editorials for their school newspapers. I’ve spoken to three thousand public high school students at a single convention, distributing free copies of the book, which they eagerly snatched up. Pastors have asked to use it in their sermons, people write and ask if they can use it to construct letters to newspapers, family members, and representatives. (The answer is always yes.)
Family physician stops prescribing all forms of hormonal contraception.
I am a family physician in Canada and a follower of Jesus Christ. I was recently given a copy of Does the Birth Control Pill cause Abortions? I was trained in the 1980s and believed that the pill worked by preventing ovulation. After a month of study and prayer, I have decided to stop prescribing all forms of hormonal contraception.
Years ago I was given an amazing opportunity to address three thousand people, most of them high school students, on the subject of abortion. This happened in a model political convention at Portland’s Memorial Coliseum.
As I have shared before, God answered prayer in dramatic ways. There was significant opposition when I began speaking. (Some students marched in protest and others stood, turned their backs to the platform, and put their fingers in their ears). But as I spoke I could sense God moving and the tide turning. When I finished (I was given an hour and spoke for 45 minutes) I was surrounded by high schoolers with questions.
Why Common Ground?
At a march in Washington, a pro-life activist comes face to face with a pro-choice activist.
Pro-Life: You’re a murderer.
Pro-Choice: You hate women.
Their discussion is short and to the point. Or, pointless.
Isn’t there a better way?
There’s a lot of abortion “discussion” among activists—combative rants where the participants talk at each other. Do they listen? Only enough to construct their next volley.
At present, the battle front on abortion is not the Supreme Court or the White House. The legal battle on abortion should be directed at our Senators and U.S. Congressmen, as well as our state representatives.
“Why ProLife? is an invaluable resource for anyone trying to help a friend or family member understand the pro-life point of view. In clear, compelling language, Randy Alcorn lays out the case for life, appealing powerfully to both the reason and the emotions.”
