What makes a person married? Is it the legal paper you sign, or the “two becoming one flesh” (sex)?

Question from a reader:

Scripture seems to define marriage as "two becoming one flesh", but we're also often taught that God designed sex only for the within context of marriage. How does just signing a paper to be married make it right before God to have sex?

Answer from Jim Swanson:

(Jim Swanson, M.Th, MSM., EPM volunteer)

The first marriage had no paper license and no human community witness. God was the witness to the union of two souls. The act of marriage to consummate that state was sex. The basis of the marriage was the very act ...

Is it as bad for a Christian to watch explicit violence as to watch explicit sex?

To me, the difference is, while sex tempts me to think of the immoral, violence (including the murders and cutting up people in Scripture) never tempts me to think about killing someone. The sexually explicit leads my mind toward immorality, the violence doesn’t.

People are different. Anyone with a tendency toward violence—and certainly that can be furthered by watching violence—should NOT watch shows with violence. The other danger is whether some people are desensitized to violence. I find my abhorrence of real life violence has not been diminished. But if that happens to someone, and I’m sure it does, they shouldn’t watch violence.

Teens Listen?

In 1988, George Michael won a Grammy award for his album Faith. This disc featured sexually graphic songs, the most controversial being ‘I Want Your Sex.’ Apparently teens were listening to Mr. Michael. That same year, the Centers for Disease Control surveyed teens and learned that 50% of males and 37% of females aged 15-17 had gotten sex sometime during their short lifetime. While a generation of teens was learning to just say no to drugs during the 80s, many of them were saying yes to sex.
