An Alarming Trend: the Illiteracy of Boys

boy readingMy friends Brett and Alex Harris, on their wonderful website www.therebelution.com, cited a Wall Street Journal article about the importance of reading, and the great decline in reading among boys. I have often cited this as one of the most alarming trends of our day.

Christian Book Expo, and "Stunned by J.I. Packer"

Tullian and Harris boysSunday night Nanci and I returned from the Christian Book Expo in Dallas where I did a number of book signings, and was involved in three upfront presentations/panels. One was with Alex and Brett Harris, authors of Do Hard Things who have the great site www.therebelution.com, and Tullian Tchividjian, the new pastor of Coral Ridge Presbyterian (where D. James Kennedy was for many years). Three great guys. Really enjoyed our time together.

Then in the afternoon Liz Curtis Higgs and I did a presentation about drawing people to Scripture through fiction. Lizzy is one of the funniest ...

Do Hard Things: A Book I’m Excited About

Do Hard ThingsA brand new book has just been released (April 15), one that I highly recommend to all young people. And middle aged people. And old people.

The book is Do Hard Things: A Teenage Rebellion Against Low Expectations, written by teenagers Alex and Brett Harris. I know these two young men well, and I believe this book is vitally needed in our churches and our culture. Alex and Brett start chapter one by saying this:

Most people don't expect you to understand what we're going to tell you in this book. And even if you understand, they don ...

March for Life, Politics, Comments, and Huckabees at Norris Ranch

March for LifeI'm interrupting my new series of blogs on longing. Why? Partly because today, January 22, is the 35th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the most tragic judicial decision in American history. It’s also the annual March for Life, which I’ve participated in, and where my heart has been today.

Here is coverage of the event from today’s Washington Post online. Note that the Post entitles the article, “A Youthful Throng Marches Against Abortion,” reporting a large percentage of the participants were teenagers. I find that very encouraging.

Smaller events happened today throughout the country. Just a ...

Mike Huckabee, Iowa Caucus and boasting in God Alone

Iowa Caucus I've assembled some holiday family pics and was about to post them, but will wait a few days in light of current events.

I haven't said anything about politics since the three November blogs about the prolife issue and the candidates. But last night's Iowa caucus is worth mentioning.

Last night we were with a group of folks here in Oregon, at Heidi's restaurant in Gresham, watching the election coverage. The gathering was hosted by nineteen year old brothers Alex and Brett Harris, who run therebelution.com website, which is in my opinion the best place ...

Join the Rebelution

Alex & Brett HarrisIn our last EPM quarterly newsletter I included an excerpt from Alex Harris’s The Myth of Adolescence. I’ve known the Harris family for many years. Gregg and Sono have been used of God to raise extraordinary children. Not just the ones you’ve heard of either, though you’ve likely heard of the oldest, Josh, author of I Kissed Dating Goodbye, A New Attitude Toward Romance and Relationships.

In the past few years I’ve gotten to know Alex and Brett Harris. These are two solid young men who love Jesus and desire to follow Him passionately. Their ...
