Why have so many Christians historically shied away from creation care? I think the answer is that concern for the environment is generally regarded as part of the liberal agenda.
I am grateful for those Christians who are called to be legislators, judges, and otherwise involved in the political arena. I am also in favor of people—in the right context—protesting injustice. On the other hand, Christians often turn politics into something too important.
Keep in mind God’s Word: “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it” (Psalm 24:1). This is not our place to trash. It’s God’s place to treasure. To care for the world is to care for its people.
For too long, evangelical Christians have neglected our God-given calling to care for the planet entrusted to us. One reason may be that our eschatology indicates the earth is headed for ruin anyway, so there’s no point in trying to rearrange the furniture on the Titanic.
Not long ago I spoke at a conference of several thousand evangelical college students. Most were from Bible-believing churches like my own.
