What Does Eternal Life Mean?

Jesus said, “For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). This never-ending life is promised to those who believe in Jesus. “But how can this be?” you might ask. “After all, everyone will die at some point.” True. But death isn’t the end of the story. Jesus promised that someday we’ll live forever with him. That means we’ll live again after we die.

What does the Bible mean by the term new heavens?

The Old Testament uses no single word for universe or cosmos. When Genesis 1:1 speaks of God’s creating “the heavens and the earth,” the words are synonymous with what we mean by universe.

What Does the Bible Say About Heaven?

Despite my best attempts to be careful with Scripture, my understanding is far from complete and is without doubt incorrect in some areas. But if the reader diligently investigates the Scripture passages referred to in this summary, he may discover to his surprise (and either to his delight or discomfort) that some of his own notions and assumptions about heaven are in fact not biblical. In the process, he will gain a far greater understanding of this vital subject.

What Does the Doctrine of the New Earth Teach Us?

God no more gives up on the Earth than He gives up on us. He is no more done with the Earth than He is done with us. God promises He will reverse the curse:

Will God resurrect animals?

HeavenThere is no indication that animals have eternal souls. However, God is perfectly capable of recreating (not the same as resurrecting) an animal who has died. There's no Scriptural proof, but I wouldn't be surprised if He does that.

For more information on the subject of Heaven, see Randy Alcorn’s book Heaven.

Will Heaven really change locations?

The current Heaven is in the angelic realm, distinctly separate from earth (though likely having more earthly qualities than we often assume). But the future Heaven will be in the human realm, on earth.

Will there be marriage in Heaven?

In Heaven there will be one marriage, not many. That marriage will be what earthly marriage symbolized and pointed to, the marriage of Christ to his bride. So we will all be married—but to Christ.

Why doesn’t the Old Testament talk about hell?

The doctrine of Hell is suggested in the Old Testament, but it is much more clearly revealed in the New. Jesus said more about Hell than anyone.

I wish I had time to fully answer your question, but I would suggest that you go to some resources online concerning the subject of Hell.

Why should we sharpen our abilities and character now when we’ll have eternity to do so?

Question from a reader:

Why should we sharpen our gifts, skills, abilities and character now while on Earth, partially in preparation for Heaven (where those gifts will be used for Christ), when we'll have eternity to do so?

HeavenAnswer from Randy Alcorn:

Part of the issue is why should we be working on something now? Because this life is a limited opportunity to make choices to follow Christ in a world that is opposed to Him. The idea of why not wait until eternity, since we’ll have all eternity to learn things, is answered because God says not ...
