How can some good, moral people not accept Christ and go to Hell, while other sinful people convert and go to Heaven?

Question from a reader:

A friend has asked me this question: How is it that someone who lives a good and moral life will go to Hell while another person who has lived a very sinful life, but repents at the last moment, will go to Heaven? Can you help me know how to explain the answer?

Is it true the Bible teaches that after we die we will enter a ‘soul sleep’?

Question from a reader:

Is it true the Bible teaches that after we die we will enter a “soul sleep”? Ecclesiastes 12:7 says the spirit returns to God. If there were no soul sleep wouldn’t that verse say the spirit goes straight to Heaven or Hell?

... The Biblical doctrine of the afterlife develops through the entire Bible (As God revealed more of his Word to humanity, we learn more about what life is after we die). Therefore by understanding what has been revealed in all of Scripture we can have a more complete and confident understanding of Heaven and Hell.

Did Jesus take on the hell we deserve?

Question from a reader:

On page 35 of the revised edition of Heaven, what do you mean when you write that Jesus took on the hell we deserve? I cannot explain this statement biblically. I can say that He took on our sins, that He faced the enemy on our behalf by dying, but did He really? Did He literally?

How can our default destination be Hell if we are one of the elect?

I don't deal with election in the Heaven book, though I do believe in election, since the Bible teaches it. Election does not change the default destination issue. All are conceived and born in sin, that is the sense in which our default destination is hell. Without God's intervention that's where we'll go. That's the point, and biblically it's not debatable.

Will you write a book on the topic of Hell someday?

Question from a reader:

People trust what you have to say about heaven. Your 2004 book by that title was a best seller. Can we expect a book from you on the topic of hell some day?

Answer from Randy Alcorn:

I have chapters on Hell in my books Heaven and If God Is Good. And I have one hell scene in most of my novels, each a bit different than the others. I have no plans to write a whole book on Hell. But I recently wrote the foreword to Mark Galli’s excellent book, God Wins, and endorsed ...

Do you think hell is located in the center of the earth?

I don't believe hell is in the center of the earth. I think it doesn't exist in this dimension, but in one outside of our own, and therefore is not located inside the earth. It's very real, as Heaven is, but as far as I can tell from Scripture, it is not located within the confines of the physical universe we know.
