Recently I shared Isaiah 43:19 with our Eternal Perspective Ministries staff. I was so moved by that verse that I looked it up in every translation, via Bible Gateway. 

The Bible calls upon people to choose to take action, speak up for, and help the poor and needy (see, for example, Proverbs 31:8–9 and James 1:27). This is the polar opposite of fatalism.

Our fates do not rest in the hands of fallen humankind: politicians, lawyers, military officers, employers, or even spouses and children. If we believe this, our reaction to current events and to many of the difficulties we face will change.

People choose Hell when they turn their backs on God. He gave us the gift of choice, to choose to know and love Him. To Him, that was worth creating us, and even sending His Son to die for us so that we could eternally know Him and be with Him forever. That is the very opposite of selfish.

Some of those who follow our ministry aren’t aware of the history of how Eternal Perspective Ministries started. As you watch this video of our story, I hope it makes you think about God’s sovereignty and leading in your own life.

God’s sovereignty is real, but not every statement people make about it is true. Scripture emphasizes God’s sovereignty, yet it fully recognizes the role of evil people as well as Satan and demons.

Do words about God’s sovereignty and providence ring hollow? On the contrary—they resonate more with me than ever. While Nanci repeatedly affirmed God’s province and sovereignty throughout our married life, she spoke about them more and with greater delight in her final four years of life here than ever before.

“Providence” is a word we use frequently in talking about God, but we may not have thought deeply about what it means. Theologian Timothy George defines it as “God’s faithful and effective care and guidance of everything which He has made toward the end which He has chosen.” God’s providence was a deep comfort to both Nanci and me as we faced her cancer.
