A. W. Tozer

In his classic book The Knowledge of the Holy, which influenced me profoundly as a new believer, A. W. Tozer wrote, "What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us." And in this excerpt from his book The Root of the Righteous, Tozer lays out why we need a right view of God—one that includes His holiness of course, but also His happiness, love, kindness, and delight.

Prayer among evangelical Christians is always in danger of degenerating into a glorified gold rush. Almost every book on prayer deals with the “get” element mainly.

It was the belief in the accountability of man to his maker that made America a great nation. Among those earlier leaders was Daniel Webster whose blazing eyes and fiery oratory often held the Senate spellbound.

Another kind of religious leader must arise among us. He must be of the old prophet type, a man who has seen visions of God and has heard a voice from the Throne.

I say this because it is possible to run a church and all of its activity without the Holy Spirit.

If there ever was an hour in which the church needed courageous men of prophetic vision, it is now. 

O God, I have tasted Thy goodness, and it has both satisfied me and made me thirsty for more.

Christianity today is man-centered, not God-centered. God is made to wait patiently, even respectfully, on the whims of men.

I would like to see a church become so godly, so Spirit-filled that it would have a spiritual influence on all of the churches in the entire area.
