Il problema di come possiamo riconciliarci con un Dio che odia il male è il più grande problema della storia. Qualcosa deve cambiare radicalmente prima di poter vedere Dio in cielo. Ciò richiede niente meno che la più grande soluzione mai individuata.
Ecco quello che dobbiamo sapere:
- “Dio creò l’uomo a sua immagine […]. Dio vide tutto quello che aveva fatto, ed ecco, era molto buono” (Genesi 1:27, 31).
Dio creò gli esseri umani con qualità personali e relazionali simili alle Sue (Genesi 1:26), e desiderava avere con loro un rapporto meraviglioso. Ma qualcosa andò terribilmente storto. Quando Adamo ed Eva scelsero di seguire il consiglio di Satana nel Giardino dell’Eden (Genesi 3), il peccato avvelenò il mondo, e ora tutti noi nasciamo con il desiderio di fare le cose a modo nostro, e non secondo la volontà di Dio.
- “Tutti hanno peccato e sono privi della gloria di Dio” (Romani 3:23).
I nostri peccati contro un Dio buono e santo ci hanno separati da Lui (si veda Isaia 59:2). Dio non può “tollerare lo spettacolo dell’iniquità” (Abacuc 1:13). A causa del peccato perdiamo il rapporto con Dio e, insieme ad esso, anche la nostra felicità. Il risultato di tutto questo è la morte. La morte spirituale costituisce la separazione da Dio in un luogo reale chiamato Inferno. La morte fisica segna la fine della nostra opportunità di entrare in relazione con Dio ed evitare la condanna eterna (Ebrei 9:27).
- “Il salario del peccato è la morte, ma il dono di Dio è la vita eterna in Cristo Gesù, nostro Signore” (Romani 6:23).
Non esiste assolutamente nulla che possiamo fare per riconciliarci con Dio. Egli è Santo, noi non lo siamo. Infatti, Egli dice che perfino le nostre opere buone sono come un abito sporco (si veda Isaia 64:6). Ma Dio ci ha amati talmente tanto da mandare Suo Figlio Gesù, pienamente Dio e pienamente uomo, per liberarci dalla morte e donarci la vita (Giovanni 3:16). “Dio invece mostra il proprio amore per noi […] mentre eravamo ancora peccatori, Cristo è morto per noi” (Romani 5:8).
Gesù fu crocifisso per pagare il prezzo dei nostri peccati. Fece per noi ciò che noi non potevamo fare per noi stessi. Quando morì per noi, Gesù disse: “È compiuto” (Giovanni 19:30). La parola greca tradotta con “è compiuto” veniva scritta sui certificati di debito quando venivano annullati. Essa significava: “pagato per intero”. In seguito, Gesù risorse dal sepolcro, vincendo il peccato e la morte (si veda 1 Corinzi 15:3-4).
- “Infatti è per grazia che siete stati salvati, mediante la fede; e ciò non viene da voi: è il dono di Dio. Non è in virtù di opere affinché nessuno se ne vanti” (Efesini2:8-9).
Il più grande dono di Dio è una relazione ristabilita con Lui stesso, che ci libera dall’inferno e ci dà accesso al cielo (Giovanni 3:36). Questo dono non dipende dai nostri meriti, ma esclusivamente dall’opera di grazia compiuta da Cristo per noi sulla croce (si veda Tito 3:5). Egli è l’unica e sola via verso Dio. Gesù disse: “Io sono la via, la verità e la vita; nessuno viene al Padre se non per mezzo di me” (Giovanni 14:6).
- “Se con la bocca avrai confessato Gesù come Signore e avrai creduto con il cuore che Dio lo ha risuscitato dai morti, sarai salvato" (Romani 10:9).
Per essere in pace con Dio dobbiamo riconoscere il peccato che è nei nostri cuori e nelle nostre azioni, e chiedere il Suo perdono. Se lo facciamo, Egli promette misericordiosamente un perdono completo: “Se confessiamo i nostri peccati, egli è fedele e giusto da perdonarci i peccati e purificarci da ogni iniquità” (1 Giovanni 1:9). Quindi, dobbiamo affermare davanti agli altri che Gesù risorto è il nostro Signore.
- “Chi ascolta la mia parola e crede a colui che mi ha mandato ha vita eterna; e non viene in giudizio, ma è passato dalla morte alla vita” (Giovanni 5:24).
La vita a cui aneliamoci viene offerta liberamente in Cristo. Possiamo credere alla Sua promessa e invocarlo affinché ci salvi, accettando umilmente il Suo dono della vita eterna: “Infatti chiunque avrà invocato il nome del Signore sarà salvato” (Romani 10:13). Lo Spirito Santo di Dio abita in noi e ci aiuta a ubbidirgli (si veda 2 Timoteo 1:14).
Il vangelo è la buona notizia della pace (cfr. Isaia 52:7). Gesù disse: “Io sono venuto perché abbiano la vita e l’abbiano in abbondanza” (Giovanni 10:10). Dio ci offre in Cristo la vita e la felicità a cui aneliamo e vuole che ne godiamo per sempre. Ecco una preghiera che può aiutarvi ad affermare la vostra fede in Gesù. Non c’è nulla di magico nel pronunciare queste parole, ma esse possono aiutarvi a esprimere sinceramente a Dio ciò che avete nel cuore:
Dio, io credo che Tu abbia mandato Tuo Figlio Gesù a morire sulla croce per pagare il prezzo di tutti i miei peccati. Credo che Gesù abbia vinto il peccato e la morte mediante la Sua resurrezione dai morti. Nella misura in cui trovo difficile credere a queste cose, chiedo che tu operi nel mio cuore e nella mia mente per vincere la mia incredulità. Aiutami a confidare in ciò che dice la Bibbia, ovvero nel fatto che Tu, Gesù, sei il Dio-uomo venuto a salvarmi dal peccato e dalla morte, per farmi riconciliare con il Padre.
Mi dolgo dei miei peccati, compreso il mio egocentrismo, e desidero ravvedermi. Confesso i miei peccati, rendendomi conto di non essere ancora consapevole di ognuno di essi, ma chiedo a Te di accrescere la mia consapevolezza. Con la Tua forza desidero allontanarmi dal fare ciò che è sbagliato e rinunciare a ogni parte della mia vita che non Ti piace, non solo alle mie azioni ma anche ai miei atteggiamenti. Desidero sperimentare la gioia di essere una persona nuova e di vivere una vita nuova. Mi arrendo a Te.
Ricevo con gratitudine il Tuo perdono e Ti chiedo di essere il mio Salvatore, Signore e Re. Vieni ad abitare in me e dammi la forza di vivere una vita nuova. Riempimi del Tuo amore. Aiutami a imparare dalla Tua Parola e dai Tuoi seguaci come vivere da persona cambiata che ama e perdona gli altri come Tu ami e perdoni me. Grazie.
Ti chiedo tutte queste cose nel nome di Gesù. Amen.
Una volta che avete accettato Cristo come vostro Salvatore, una delle cose più importanti da fare è diventare parte di una famiglia di cristiani, chiamata “chiesa”. Una buona chiesa insegnerà la Parola di Dio e offrirà amore, aiuto e sostegno. Se avete altre domande su Gesù, è lì che potrete trovare delle risposte. Cercate persone che conoscano la Parola di Dio e che possano aiutarvi a crescere nel vostro rapporto con Gesù! Leggete la Bibbia, pregate, condividete la vostra fede e riunitevi regolarmente con il popolo di Dio. “Crescete nella grazia e nella conoscenza del nostro Signore e Salvatore Gesù Cristo” (2 Pietro 3:18).
Our Problem, God’s Solution
The problem of how we could possibly be reconciled with a God who hates evil is the greatest problem of history. Before we can see God in Heaven, something must radically change. This calls for no less than the greatest solution ever devised.
Here is what we need to know:
1. “God created mankind in his own image...God saw all that he had made, and it was very good” (Genesis 1:27, 31).
God made human beings with personal and relational qualities like His own (Genesis 1:26) and desired to have a delightful relationship with them. But something went terribly wrong. When Adam and Eve chose to follow Satan’s advice in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3), sin poisoned the world and now we are all born with the desire to do things our own way, not God’s.
2. "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23).
Our sins against a good and holy God have distanced us from Him (see Isaiah 59:2). God “cannot tolerate wrongdoing” (Habakkuk 1:13). Through sin we forfeit a relationship with God, and along with it our happiness. The result of all this is death. Spiritual death is separation from God in a very real place called Hell. Physical death marks the end of our opportunity to enter into a relationship with God and avoid eternal condemnation (Hebrews 9:27).
3. “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23).
There is absolutely nothing we can do to restore ourselves to God. He is holy, we are not. In fact, He says even our good deeds are like filthy rags (see Isaiah 64:6). But God loved us so much He sent us His Son Jesus, fully God and fully man, to deliver us from death and give us life (John 3:16). "God demonstrates His own love toward us…while we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8).
Jesus went to the cross to pay the price for our sins. He did for us what we couldn’t do for ourselves. When Jesus died for us, He said, “It is finished” (John 19:30). The Greek word translated “it is finished” was written across certificates of debt when they were canceled. It meant “paid in full.” Jesus then rose from the grave, conquering sin and death (see 1 Corinthians 15:3-4).
4. “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9).
God’s greatest gift is a restored relationship with Himself, delivering us from Hell and granting us entry into Heaven (John 3:36). This gift depends not on our merit but solely on Christ’s work of grace for us on the cross (see Titus 3:5). He is the one and only way to God. He said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6).
5. “If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved" (Romans 10:9).
To be right with God, we must admit our sinful hearts and actions, and ask God’s forgiveness. If we do, He graciously promises full forgiveness: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). Then we are to affirm to others that the resurrected Jesus is our Lord.
6. "Whoever hears my word and believes Him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life” (John 5:24).
The life we long for is freely offered to us in Christ. We can believe His promise and call on Him to save us, humbly accepting His gift of eternal life: “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (Romans 10:13). God’s Holy Spirit indwells us and helps us obey Him (see 2 Timothy 1:14).
The gospel is called the “good news of happiness” (Isaiah 52:7). Jesus said, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10). God offers us in Christ the life and happiness we crave and He wants us to enjoy forever. Here’s a prayer that may help you affirm your faith in Jesus. There’s no magic in just saying the words, but they may help you genuinely express to God what’s in your heart:
God, I believe you sent your Son Jesus to die on the cross to pay the price for all my sins. I believe Jesus conquered sin and death through His resurrection from the dead. To the degree I find any of this difficult to believe, I ask that you work in my heart and mind to overcome my unbelief. Help me to trust what the Bible says—that you, Jesus, are the God-man who came to rescue me from sin and death and to restore me to the Father.
I am sorry for and want to repent of my sins, including my self-centeredness. I confess my sins, realizing I’m not yet aware of all of them, but I ask you to make me more aware. With your strength I want to turn away from doing wrong, and give up every part of my life that doesn’t please you—not just my actions but my attitudes. I want to experience the joy of being a new person and living a new life. I surrender myself to you.
I gratefully receive your forgiveness and ask you to be my Savior and Lord and King. Please come to indwell me and empower me to live a new life. Fill me with your love. Help me to learn from your Word and your followers how to live as a transformed person who loves and forgives others as you love and forgive me. Thank you.
I ask all these things in the name of Jesus. Amen.
