Last year John Piper wrote an article titled “No Maverick Cells in Me: My Deepest Hope During Cancer.” Nanci and I first read this while she was undergoing cancer treatments, and it really encouraged us. It’s an apt reminder for us again, as we are in another season of waiting and uncertainty related to Nanci’s latest test results.

In this article, John Piper answers the question, “Does God Scare Us into Saving Faith?” Given the way that the doctrine of an eternal Hell is under attack even in many Christian churches, this is an important topic to think through.

Over the years, I’ve been asked why I would quote from someone in my books or on social media when I don’t agree with them in every area. 

Having turned 64 this year, this post from John Piper got my attention. It concerns what he learned about himself on a leave of absence at age 64. I prayed for him then, and now as I read this I also pray for myself.

The Lord does not call us merely to release our anxiety to Him, but to willingly cast it upon Him—and not some of it, but all of it. God wants us to trust Him in both the big things and the little things.

In 1991, the year after we started Eternal Perspective Ministries, John Piper came out with The Pleasures of God, which was updated in 2000. This is a truly great book that I highly recommend. 

The major Christian creeds state, “I believe in the resurrection of the body.” But I’ve found in many conversations that Christians tend to spiritualize the resurrection of the dead, effectively denying it. Our incorrect thinking about bodily resurrection stems from our failure to understand the environment in which resurrected people will live—the New Earth.
