WORLD reports that "Russian President Vladimir Putin signed into law an 'anti-terror' package that includes measures eviscerating religious freedom. The new law requires government permits to preach and teach the gospel, and restricts evangelism essentially to registered church building sites."

Our problems center on our failure to recognize 1) who God is and 2) who we are… humans made in God’s image, yet marred, broken, separated from God, and hell-bound because of our sin.

Whether or not you’re a resident of California, there’s very good reason to understand and closely follow the developments of SB 1146, a bill that if passed would likely set a precedent for similar legislation nationwide. 

A reader recently asked me a thoughtful question about something I posted on Facebook that used the term “racial profiling.” As a police officer, he was wondering what I meant by that, and whether I was referring specifically to profiling by law enforcement.

People have been discussing this issue for weeks, generating a lot more heat than light. Angry and dismissive responses to others’ positions have been routine. I think it’s worth continuing the discussion, since even after this particular issue passes, a host of similar ones await us. 

Thanks, Dan Franklin, for your excellent insights not only on the Syrian refugees, but also on the tone of the debate among believers. God, help us to be compassionate, understanding, reasonable, wise and biblical all at the same time.

Actor John Rhys-Davies, best known for his portrayal of Indiana Jones’s Egyptian friend Salla in Raiders of the Lost Ark and its sequels, and Gimli in The Lord of the Rings, gave an interview recently and made some powerful and insightful points.

The way to love people is never to celebrate our sin or theirs, our temptations or theirs, but to come in humility as a fellow sinner and point to the One who paid for all our sins on the cross, and offers forgiveness.
