Question from a reader:
I’ve read the materials on your website about the value of children. My wife and I are planning to adopt a child. We believe this is biblical; would you agree? One thing we are apprehensive about is being good first-time parents at our ages (we are in our 30s). What are your thoughts?
Answer from Doreen Button, EPM staff:
Our ministry isn’t equipped to provide counseling in the traditional sense; however, I can say that God seems to be fond of adoption. Read Romans 8 and Ephesians 1. We are all “adopted” into God’s family when we surrender to Him as our Father.
My family includes adoptees from embryo to interracial to international, so I am totally biased in that direction. EPM applauds adoption as a godly alternative to abortion. And, regarding age, I and at least one of my colleagues are children of “older” parents. I think we turned out pretty well, and our parents survived with smiles intact.
I encourage you to pray, seek God’s counsel and that of wise people in your church community (and if you don’t have one, join one!), and listen for His response. Psalm 37:4 says if we take delight in Him, the desires of our heart will come from Him. So “Seek God’s Kingdom first” (Matthew 6:33) and let Him guide you forward.
