Randy Alcorn spoke to a group of young moms at Mom to Mom at his local church, Good Shepherd Community Church on various topics, such as Heaven, parenting, money and more. 

In Part 1 of Lewis and Longing, a few blogs ago, I quoted from his great sermon, later published as an essay, “The Weight of Glory: And Other Addresses.” There’s more in that essay I want to share.

Over years of biblical study, my view of resurrection and the eternal Heaven (and to a lesser degree, the intermediate Heaven) gradually changed. 

The popular notion of the “sweet by and by” is often one of clouds, pain-free bliss and not much else—except for the occasional angel floating by with a harp. If one’s idea of eternity is a happy pill, such an image might be appealing.

There’s a lot of abortion “discussion” among activists—combative rants where the participants talk at each other.  Do they listen?  Only enough to construct their next volley.

Shortly after EPM started, inmates began writing to request Randy’s books. Over the years Randy has generously given away thousands of books.

Last month, on the opening day of the World Council of Churches Central Committee meeting in Geneva, someone gave a stirring and controversial speech, with a message that made many squirm. Bishop Hilarion Alfeyev, the Russian Orthodox Bishop of Vienna and Austria, made the following remarkable statements.  

As Christians we have a dual citizenship. Just as He promises to make men and women new, God also promises to renew the Earth itself. Scripture calls this the New Earth, an Earth where “there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain” and “no longer will there be any curse” (Rev. 21:1, 4, 22:3, NIV).

In Christ’s day, shepherds stood on the bottom rung of the Palestinian social ladder. They shared the same unenviable status as tax collectors and dung sweepers.

No writer has had greater impact on me than C. S. Lewis. I find both his fiction and nonfiction to be penetrating and life-shaping. And when it comes to the subject of the longings of our heart, no one said it better than Lewis.  

The day the first shipment of Heaven for Kids was delivered, Nanci and I drove to someone’s house that we’d never been to before or since. When we pulled up, outside the house next door a boy about ten years old was sitting on the curb. 

I give away lots of books to people I come across, believing God gives me divine appointments every day.
