This morning after breakfast I was again distressed, very distressed, at the thought of the thousands of unborn children that are legally crushed to death by sterile medical instruments. 

If we think that issues of race and racism in America were settled with the civil rights movement in the sixties, we are not awake to the real world.

The terrorist attacks that destroyed the World Trade Center in New York and damaged the Pentagon were not just about buildings and airplanes. They were about people. In the midst of this, Christians are called to be, as Augustine put it, "the best of citizens." But what should we be doing?

This weekend I received a call from a Christian friend who was deeply troubled. The husband of a woman to whom she had been witnessing had been killed in the World Trade Center attack.

Many Christians are speaking this way about the murderous destruction of the World Trade Towers on September 11, 2001. God did not cause it, but he can use it for good. There are two reasons I do not say this. 

I am not a brave person. More often than not, when God has a difficult assignment for me, I pull a Moses: “I can’t, Lord!...why me???” Recently He gave me a chance to stretch a little.

How do you pray in the midst of crisis? More than any other portion of Scripture, Psalms shows us how. Beginning with Psalm 3, and over and over again until Psalm 149, we find the psalmist crying out to the Lord in various dire circumstances.

Many of you know that I was scheduled for a meeting in New York City on September 10-11. I was so moved by what I saw that I wanted to report to you not only on my well-being, but to attempt to paint the images that are now imprinted forever on my memory.

Just as no person in this world can satisfy us, only Christ, so no place in this world can satisfy us, only Heaven.

Someone asked me after our Tuesday prayer service in response to the terrorist attack, “Can we pray for justice, and yet love our enemy at the same time?” The answer is yes.

We are partly and appropriately struck silent with the enormous loss of life in the collapse of the Twin Towers, the explosion at the Pentagon, and the highjacked airliners that were crashed.

This is the most difficult day of my life. That apparent terrorist attacks could bring such death and destruction to unsuspecting people is absolutely unthinkable. Yet the numbers of the dead and wounded from these attacks will be extraordinary.

Inconsolable pain, the kind that drives away every vestige of happiness and renders us incapable of fully enjoying any pleasure, can be handled only be discovering a capacity for a different kind of joy.
